Over 60 and Still Climbing  Never let age stop you from doing what you love - even if what you love is strenuous, risky or just freakin' crazy! And so Goody Niosi, at age 66, sets out on a month-long solo hiking trip in Europe. Although she doesn't necessarily want to re-create the experiences she had when she was 30-something, (certainly not the one that involved that waiter in the night club - the one who said he was secretly a prince) she certainly does have every intention of hiking up the alps, through herds of cows and to the restaurants inevitably perched on top of the distant peaks. And just like 30 years previously, she has no room reservations - just a Eurailpass and a willingness to embrace the unexpected. Does the unexpected happen? Well no, not unless you count that mistake while hiking in the Dolomites that finds her hiking up the one steep mountain she was determined not to tackle, and that cliff climb that involved a steel ladder and the mantra "DON'T LOOK DOWN!" and getting off the train in northern Italy because a group of strangers voted that she should. Hiking in the pouring rain and the sweltering heat has its compensations: beauty, of course, but perhaps most importantly chocolate and the realization that 60 is just a number. (but most importantly, chocolate) I have to thank a couple of people who read this manuscript and helped bring it to you. I could not have done this without them: David Scott and, most especially, John O’Melveny Woods. I also have to thank Pat Durose who joined me for six days of my trip – and lived to tell about it. How she managed to put up with me with such equanimity is still a mystery to me.
